Outsourcing is a technique used by companies to bring in the outside firms with money and make them handle internal company functions. Outsourcing is used to reduce costs, Improve quality of service, focus on core business, avoid health insurance for workers and etc. With the development of technology Outsourcing comes in more various forms. Call centers are one form of outsourcing. Call centers deal with customers who has inquiries through phone calls. Booking a flight, buying a theater ticket, and complaining about a product are jobs that are handled by call center workers. Philippines and India are lead countries in number of employees and income by call centers. Philippines is a great outsource for companies because of the cheap labor cost and ability of Filipinos to speak fluent English. Philippines is looking forward for a better income from call centers by increasing the work force and developing technology that make better calling condition for the workers and the customers. I heard that the income for average call center worker is 12000 pesos per month.

Question: Are Filipinos who want to learn English and American accent due to employment a form of imperialism?
Hi David to answer your question I think that learning an accent to get a call center job is a form of imperialism. When Filipinos try to learn an accent to please their western employers and customers it shows how superior the english language is in the world. I feel like this makes the Filipino language, and the Filipinos seem inferior, even though that is not the case.
ReplyDeleteDavid, I think a key word in your question there is "want." If they allow the change to happen and accept the fact that they are changing, then I don't see it as a form of imperialism. I do however, view it on the part of TCNs as a sort of "soft colonialism" where the more powerful country uses the less powerful country for its resources (including human resources) and in return the less powerful country is seen as being exploited.
